Module Details
Indicative Content Students will study the basics of what sound is and how to manipulate it in a digital environment. The students will study how microphones and mixing desks operate. They will study the environmental impact on audio recording to record voice overs, interviews, vox pops and foley. Both internal and externally recording techniques will be studied on location and in a recording studio. They will study audio processing software and virtual synthesiser tools to help process the audio and prepare it for application to a short film piece.
Assessment Details A COURSEWORK weighted at 100%.

A PRACTICAL piece weighted at 50% - that will assess Learning Outcomes 1 and 2. A written report weighted at 50% (max 1500 words) - that will assess Learning Outcome 3.
Learning Strategies The course will involve a combination of tutor-led lectures and seminars and independent learning totalling 3 hours per week. Lectures and laboratory sessions comprise of 12 x 1hour lectures (1:n)1 12 x 2 hour laboratory sessions (1:25)2
Prospectus Information This module aims to develop the skills of the student in sound production technology and location audio recording. There is heavy emphasis on learning the skills of production and post-production using professional pieces of audio technology to produce audio for programmes suitable for film, television and radio.

Learning Outcome

1. DEMONSTRATE THE FUNDAMENTALS OF AUDIO RECORDING, FOLEY AND ADR USING A SELECTION OF MICROPHONES.
2. PRODUCE A SHORT AUDIO RECORDING TO COMPLEMENT A PIECE OF FILM USING APPROPRIATE AUDIO AND VIDEO PROCESSING SOFTWARE.
3. EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATE PRINCIPLES AND LIMITATIONS OF AUDIO RECORDING TECHNOLOGY IN BOTH PRODUCTION AND POST PRODUCTION FIELDS IN THE FORM OF A WRITTEN TECHNICAL REPORT.
